A Revolutionary Diagnostic Tool
One of the cornerstones of general and preventive dentistry is the detection and treatment of dental caries, better known as cavities or tooth decay. Because even cavities that are virtually invisible to the naked eye can pose a serious risk to the entire tooth, early detection of this type of decay is critical to successful treatment. Previously, finding tiny spots of decay – especially those that lie between teeth – involved the use of x-rays and visual inspection, not to mention poking around the surface of a tooth to test for sensitivity. Today, however, our practice chooses to utilize the proven power of DIAGNOdent, a state-of-the-art dental laser that is capable of detecting the presence of tooth decay far before it becomes a more serious problem.
Benefits of DIAGNOdent Technology
DIAGNOdent detects the existence of tooth decay by using a laser to compare healthy enamel to potentially compromised teeth. First, the laser diode formulates a healthy baseline wavelength by measuring the levels of fluorescent light reflected off of a tooth that is completely devoid of decay. Other areas of enamel are compared to this healthy baseline, making it easy to determine which tooth surfaces contain even the smallest traces of damage. Because we use DIAGNOdent to detect cavities before they grow in size and in depth, we can treat with smaller fillings that are shallower as well. More of your natural tooth material is preserved and treatment is generally faster, more comfortable, and more convenient for the patient. As with everything we do here, the use of DIAGNOdent in our office is intended to make your every visit easier and more pleasant, all while ensuring your optimal oral health.
